Why Add a Rudder?
The Scupper 14 started out with a concept: to lower the footwells below the waterline, which had never been done in a sit-on-top. This would lower the center of gravity, creating leverage, shrink the paddle entry zone, allow for superior body position and a narrow hull.
What we built was a monster. Fast, sleek, turns on a dime athletically…..yet sooo stable. A performance kayak anyone can handle? Bingo. That’s the 14. It’s like driving a car as maneuverable as a Porsche but on the sturdy platform of a solid SUV.
Our patented Scupper Valves unleash a rare combination of elements. We took the line where speed meets stability and stepped right over the top of it. And built something different.
The Scupper 14 kayak works with or without a rudder. Why do some choose to add a rudder to this kayak? Many reasons:
-Some people are used to rudders and enjoy them.
-Rudders allow a paddler to navigate easily without utilizing shoulder muscles only all day long. Burn less calories per mile.
-Rudders are a key safety item in wind and currents, which is why they are more commonly seen in saltwater or more dangerous areas.
-Rudders are faster and recommended for anyone who wants more speed or for racing.
-Rudders are a great way to make up for a lack of upper body strength.
Regardless of the various motivational elements, when you add a rudder, you create a faster, safer kayak for yourself. You’ll wear out slower, and it will revolutionize you way you feel about crosswinds and choppy waves.
Featuring the world’s biggest kayak hatch. We’re pretty sure you’ll be able to fit everything you need for that next camping trip. This package includes comfortable deck pads in the footwells and tankwells. You’ll also receive hull access via the 4″ hatch in front of the cockpit. 4 aluminum grab handles make the boat easier to deal with off the water. Finally, rod holders are included for fishing rods or safety flags.
Comfort is one of the things the 14 is known for. We consulted with an ergonomics professional to ensure you could paddle all day without pain. The lowered footwells create a bend in the knees that is helpful to the lower back area. The idea is to keep you paddling along all day relaxed, poised and happy.
So if you’re ready for a kayak equal parts speed, stability and comfort: look no further than the Scupper 14 Rudder version.
