In the 1970’s Tim Niemier began building sit-on-top kayaks in Malibu, CA. In the 1980’s he started a revolution with his Scupper line of plastic kayaks. Over the next few decades these kayaks reigned supreme. That is, until now.
The Swell Watercraft Scupper 14 was born as Tim’s final installment in the series. In one of our original meetings, Tim said “the only way to make my kayaks better is going to be to drop the floor down.” This would lower the center of gravity, creating leverage, shrink the paddle entry zone, allow for superior body position and a narrow hull. From then onward, the search was on to create a drainage valve system that would allow us to do just that and create the greatest sit-on-top kayak ever made.
We launched our company in 2018 with the Scupper 14: simply the fastest, most efficient SOT anyone had ever paddled. It’s a kayak that tracks straight, but since it relies on secondary stability, it doesn’t feel like a barge to turn around. It’s a rare breed: a sit-on-top that allows you to drop a knee and maneuver athletically instead of just utilizing brute force with your shoulder muscles.
The Adventure Package suits the Tim Niemer style quite well. You can tour, fish, camp, dive and explore with style and grace in this boat. The stern hatch is great for carrying rarely used important items like first aid kit or fire starter. The bow hatch delivers quick access into the hull. The deck pads dampen sound and allow you to paddle bare foot if you want. Rod holders can carry your fishing rods or are often used to mount a safety flag in places with boat traffic.
The 14 is versatile and grants ultimate access to all kinds of paddlers. It’s great on all kinds of rivers, lakes, bays and even in the open ocean. It’s incredibly stable. You can pass it around your family. Yet it’s fast, performance driven, and allows you to do advanced maneuvers utilizing body position. There’s a line where speed and stability meet. When we made our patented Scupper Valve system, we crossed that line and changed the game.
